GREAT IDEAS DISCUSSION GROUP
The Great Ideas Discussion Group and its seminars are open to anyone interested in participating. The seminars are designed to suit the needs of busy people who, immersed in careers and families, still value serious conversation with their peers about ideas that have challenged humankind through the ages.
The seminars address fundamental questions of the human condition through a close reading and discussion of timeless literature, philosophy and political discourse. Seminar members meet once a month for 90 minutes to discuss one of these texts. Discussions are exploratory and no previous knowledge of the author, text, or subject is required.
A new series of eight began on September 18. The readings selected for 2007 - 2008 are the formative documents and writings of the United States of America. Most Americans are familiar with these documents and writings but many have never given them the close reading they deserve.
All readings listed below are available on the internet.
Great Ideas Discussion Group meets on third Tuesdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Lake Eustis Institute Classroom, 135 North Grove Street, Eustis. It is recommended you register two weeks in advance. Virginia Barker and Fr. John Jacobs will lead the discussions. Participation is free.
